BEFORE TAKING UP his duties as the first ever international guest of honour at Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities, Star Wars actor Mark Hamill sat down for a little chat with Ryan Tubridy on The Late Late Show.

He shared some jokes and told the audience about how Star Wars defies time, much to the confusion of little kids:

There was a period between when I did Return of the Jedi and this new one, and five year old kids… They’ve no sense of time. There’s nothing in the movie that really dates it, so y’know they think we made the movies last month.

The parents of these kids would spot Hamill at airports and tell their kids “Oh my God, look! It’s Luke Skywalker!” Mark told Ryan about how the kids would usually gasp in disgust, wondering what happened to Luke, and how he became 52-years-old so quickly.

The conversation later turned to Mark’s co-star and very good friend, Carrie Fisher.

Ryan asked if Carrie and Mark had an arrangement in place, for what each of them would do if the other were to die first.

We were kidding around, we were always irreverent with each other. I could make her laugh, she made me hysterical with laughter. In the script for this film it says “Forget the past. Kill it if you have to.” I said to Carrie “They’re doing a pretty good job! First on Solo, now on me. If this is a pattern, you’re next.”

We were talking about mortality, and y’know facing the final curtain and I said “Just promise me. If I go first, you’ll heckle my funeral.”

Carrie asked Mark to do the same for her. Mark began to talk about how difficult it has been to move on after Carrie’s death.

It’s been really tough, because she was irreplaceable and it’s part of life, but uh, it’s very hard to deal with. She’s so vibrant. It’s hard to think of her in the past tense. It’s really a shame, because in this next episode she was meant to be more prominent.
